Women's History Month
An Historical Journey - the story of the Encyclopaedia of Western Australia enriched by the music of the heroines of our history.

Set in the historic Fremantle Arts Centre WIPWA once again hosted an event for Women's History Month that focussed on our publishing industry.

The State's most ambitious historical project is underway at the University of Western Australia's Centre for Western Australian History. The Historical Encyclopaedia of Western Australia will be comprehensive, authoritative and lively, covering all periods and aspects of Western Australian history. It will become the first reference point for academic and general historians, students of Western Australian history, journalists, politicians and general readers. Western Australia's leading historians and people with a love of history from across the State are contributing to the volume. In total more than four hundred people are involved in writing the Encyclopaedia, making it the largest consultative history project ever undertaken in Western Australia. The Encyclopedia will be published in 2006.

Presented by: Dr Jan Gothard, General Editor, Historical Encyclopedia of Western Australia

Jan Gothard is General Editor of the Encyclopedia. She is a senior lecturer in History at Murdoch University, and is a former director of the Centre for WA History. Her publications include works on Western Australia's relations with Asia, feminist history, the White Australia policy, and in the oral history and the disability field. Her most recent monograph, Blue China: Single female migration to colonial Australia (2000) won the WA Premier's Award for Non-fiction in 2001. Originally from Tasmania, Jan has lived and worked around Australia, in Japan, the UK and the USA, and has been in WA since 1986. Her background is Australian, Italian and British.

AND

Val Hastings, from the Mucky Duck Bush Band. Val's wonderful songs draw on the experience and lives of ordinary and extraordinary women in our Australian History - songs of life, loss and triumph in the often very tough context of the development of our nation. Val's music will add a personal perspective and unique richness to the words of the encyclopedia project. Born and raised in the Welsh valleys Val has music in the blood and wit in her heart. Although not in the original line up, Val was very much involved in the early days in organising the bush dances. (Her father and brother were the founding members of the band). As a folk singer from an early age she can sing a good song and provide haunting harmonies. She is a first class dance caller and her natural manner and wit make dancing easy and fun (even if you have two left feet!!). One of the few people to have mastered the art of spoon playing, Val is arguably the best in Australia. She also plays the mandolin, bodhran, snare and lagerphone (a uniquely Australian instrument).

Travels in Terra Marvellous - written, directed and performed by Monica Main

On a balmy night in March, we gathered in the courtyard of the Fremantle Arts Centre to celebrate Women's History Month. The old stone walls of the 19th century building were a perfect backdrop for the theatre we were about to see. Perth-born actor, playwright and director, Monica Main, played the part of May Vivienne, a 19th century opera singer-turned travel writer. May Vivienne's book, Travels in Western Australia published in 1901, is mainly about her travels around the Goldfields. Like in all good theatre Monica was May, and the audience was enthralled with her stories of pegging her own mining claim, travelling alone by horse and buggy to remote settlements and her descriptions of the grand buildings in Kalgoorlie and Coolgardie.

Copies of May Vivienne's book were available on the night thanks to Serendipity Books. Also on sale was the Golden Quest Discovery Trail Guidebook - edited by WiPWA committee member, Jan Knight. This unique book with accompanying CD is a guide to a 965-kilometre adventure drive through the Eastern Goldfields. Monica Main appears on the CD again in the role of May Vivienne telling some of her stories.

Christmas Function - Breakfast by the Bay

This was a gorgeous Perth summer morning on the verandah of East Perth's ritzy Lamont's winery. We had a fabulous breakfast and were then generously entertained by Kate Lamont who spoke about her busy life schedule. She talked of her television filming commitments at the wineries, as well as daily cooking events she must cater for and her busy family life. We were all amazed at how she fits everything in. She said her publishing efforts were small in comparison to everything else going on in her life but she does plan to publish the second of two Lamont cookery books soon. Thanks very much to Kate for sparing her valuable time to talk to WiP members.

WiP Birthday Bash

Women in Publishing celebrated its 10th anniversary at the new Boulevard Centre at Floreat Forum. It was an entertaining evening full of games, prizes, good food and wine and conviviality. Many WiP members kindly donated their new books, free consultations, editing, proofreading, jewellery, subscriptions to magazines, wine which were drawn in a raffle for other lucky participants. Thank you so much to all who donated - we see it as a great opportunity to spread our talents in the network. On arrival, we partook of Ros's lifestyle bingo which was a huge hit and got us all mingling whether we wanted to or not! There was even a colouring in contest...

Thanks to the committee for a huge effort and a successful evening.

The Virtual Reality of Quoting

This was another fabulous joint function organised by Women in Publishing and Society of Editors. Held at the exclusive Royal Perth Yacht Club overlooking yachts moored in the moonlight, the evening was a great success. It was a great opportunity to get some editorial quoting practice in a non-threatening environment. The panel of experts from different industry areas assessed about six different quotes from the membership (those who dared!). The results were interesting, entertaining and very valuable for those working in publishing and related fields.

Don't miss the next function - there's always something to learn - and have fun at the same time!

Tuesday 15 April
An Evening with Stephen Cole, eBooks.com
This evening cocktail seminar gave us the opportunity of meeting one of the pioneers of electronic publishing, Stephen Cole, CEO, eBooks Corporation.

Formerly the owner of The Lane Bookshop in Claremont, Stephen founded eBooks.com, a successful global company, in January 1997. Having purchased the URL for just $2,000, he was offered $1.5 million for it in 2000, when it was launched as a commercial venture. eBooks.com is an Australian company with a global focus and offices in Boston, London and Perth. Its aim is to be the pre-eminent digital bookstore on the Internet, selling whole books, chapters and pages of books online from the world's leading publishers. It already has nonexclusive licensing contracts with more than 45 publishers, including HarperCollins, Penguin Books, McGraw-Hill, John Wiley, Oxford University Press, Cambridge University Press and Taylor & Francis.

"Consumers are coming to us in hoards because of the name," said Stephen. "We want to make eBooks.com the first logical place for consumers to come to look for any eBook."

Stephen always presents a fascinating picture of the growth of his business and his passion for the industry and its future. The conversation and discussion was lively and informative as usual. Another fabulous evening at the heritage King Street Arts Centre!

WiP Christmas Function: THIS CHRISTMAS, LET'S THINK 'RENEWAL'!
The Piney Lakes Environmental Education Centre in Melville was a magnificent venue to recharge ourselves before the Christmas rush. This new age building uses wind, sun, water and earth to create renewable energy and is not connected to water, power or sewerage. The tour was a fascinating insight into what can be done for sustainable development in our own backyards. We were also joined by Carla van Raay who shared her amazing life story which she has finally captured in an autobiography entitled 'God's Callgirl'. After life in a convent and subsequently as a prostitute, Carla's personal growth took many years to culminate in her story being published by Penguin. Her present work, helping people to find greater understanding and inner peace, comes out of her life experiences and training in counselling and group leading. She shared some of her insights into life as well as her interesting first steps in the world of publishing. Her book looks set to be a huge success.

Mastering the Art of Marketing ... yourself, your product, your service
A seminar exploring effective marketing strategies to raise your profile, promote your product and attract more clients to your business.
The roaring sea provided a fabulous backdrop at AQWA, Hillarys Boat Harbour for this year's WiP winter seminar.

The Marketing Matrix: Michael Tunnecliffe, a professional speaker, author and clinical psychologist, showed how to develop a "Marketing Grid" to maximise your marketing efforts and save on marketing costs. Michael moved from a private practice in Clinical Psychology 10 years ago to set up his own business in training and publishing. He works with many groups on marketing their services and products.

Harnessing the Power of Internet Marketing: Jackie Gill gave an animated presentation on the necessity of marketing you and your business through the Internet. Jackie began her career as a journalist with The West Australian and has worked for various media organisations including the ABC. She has worked for the Office of Information and Communications in the Department of Commerce and Trade and with Harvestroad where she delivered a seminar program called E-aware (delivering ecommerce training workshops to small and micro business people).

A panel of members enlightened the audience with their own experiences: Roslyn Snyder (psychology books for the layperson), Julie-Ann Harper (Innovative Business Resources, independent publisher), Jane Stone (Jane Stone Textile Design and part time bookseller).

Adding Colour to Your Marketing: Sandrah Humphries rounded off the morning with her authentic attitude to colour and how it can help produce a product that will sell. Sandrah apporaches colour analysis from a healing sense of self discovery.

The day ended with a delicious lunch.

Women in Publishing Launch with a View: Garden Party Launch
The first WiP members' directory in four years was launched at the Recreation and Conference Centre at Point Walter. Several members also took the opportunity to launch their products and services. A delicious afternoon tea interspersed the proceedings.
The following members spoke about their publishing journeys:
Roslyn Snyder talked about her second book, Journey to the Centre of Your Life: Your Compass. She emphasised that second books are not necessarily easier than first books and that each publication is a personal and professional journey in itself.
The Fraser sisters launched their new series of greeting cards based on the traditions of Celtic earth religions. The cards are vibrant and mystical, celebrating festivals such as Yule, Lammas, Beltane and other seasonal markders of the year.
Francess Day talked of her work with groups who have undergone traumatic stress and her hopes to ultimately publish a book on the subject. She has several workshops planned for this year.
Tilda Lupton showed her new online writing training program. It is designed primarily to help job candidates address selection criteria.
Elizabeth Tuettemann's insights into relationships, gained through both personal experience and her research for a doctoral dissertation at UWA, have been distilled into her book The Little Book of Insights into Couple Relationships.

"To BIB or Not to BIB" - a case study in eCommerce
In 2000 Tilda Lupton of Lupton Training & Publishing set up a website, to leverage the promotion of her book "Answering Selection Criteria... the hidden rules". Not afraid of taking a risk, and investing money to see how well the strategy would work, Tilda also wanted to offer customers an easy way to look at the book online, download a copy and pay by credit card over a secure site. So what happened? Tilda tried Business In A Box, an eCommerce software package designed to put your store online.

Tilda spoke about her experience as a micro business owner who has climbed a steep learning curve. Hear first hand what it is like to venture into the world of eCommerce using one of the first available generic eCommerce packages on the market.

The Women in Publishing Christmas Party was held at the charming heritage building on the sea, Kidogo Arthouse, Bathers Beach, Fremantle.
Sid Roby started the festive season for us in these wonderful surroundings on the beach, with scrumptious food and great company. Sid's informal talk and poetry delighted the audience of about 30 people. He shared his experiences in coping with, and overcoming illiteracy, and read from his first individual publication, Looking at Life with Sid Roby.
Sid already has a large following, many being overseas visitors, derived in part from his guest appearances on 6PR radio. Now he gives readings at venues around Perth and has recently appeared on Australian Story.

A networking dinner was held at the Annalakshmi Indian restaurant. Around 20 members partook of a sumptuous vegetarian Indian buffet accompanied by non-alcoholic herbal 'wine'. It was a great opportunity to meet with other members in an informal setting and find out what books have been published, projects edited and covers designed. The idea is to continue this informal networking dinner on an ad hoc basis probably every couple of months if the demand is there. Any feedback or suggestions for other restaurants is appreciated.
