Shirley's background is in nursing having spent 12 years as a nurse and 25 years as a nurse educator/lecturer. She is currently engaged as one of a team of four professionals to write the history of the WA School of Nursing 1975-1994. Interviews with staff and students have been completed while research for memorabilia at the Health Department et al. continues. Shirley is also teaching in the undergraduate and postgraduate nursing programs at Murdoch University School of Nursing.
